A new beginning
January can always be a bit bleak here in Washington. The days are short, the weather is unpredictable, and not much is growing. Our Farm in winter really doesn’t produce much. We aren’t yet starting the seeds that will grow the upcoming years crops. We’re just waiting out the grey, knowing that soon spring will burst forth with a bounty of color and sunlight. However, the cold bleak winter does offer its own special beauty in shades of grey and white. A few times of year we get treated to a stunning blanket of snow that drapes our little farm in a cloak of white. Our very own little Winter Wonderland.

Winters Calm
When snow falls on the farm it brings a quite calm, that just can’t be described. Everything becomes still, all of the birds and furry creatures settle in and don’t stir. The air is crisp and clean, adding another layer to the peaceful serene setting. It’s simultaneously an eerie lonely feeling and extremely beautiful and tranquil. The evergreens dusted with snow look like something out of Christmas card or a Rockwell painting. The ground is quilted in soft white wrapping, concealing the world beneath it.

Frozen in Time
The ice and snow slow the pace around the farm, not just for us but for nature as well. Everything is frozen in time, locked in the ice coating its surface.

Frozen Nirvana
Like an alien world or scene out of a Dr. Seuss book, the ice makes the familiar appear foreign. wonderland

Breaking of Day
The early morning sunrise paints the sky with beautiful oranges, yellows, and blues popping with color over the baren white landscape.

Two Big Kids in a Winter Dreamland
Sledding on our little hill is one of the biggest highlights during our snow days. Yes, we’re two big middle-aged kids, playing in our winter wonderland!

Taking a break from their busy day.
Our dogs love the snow…well three of them do. Herman, the true southern dog, thinks he’s being tortured by the evil white stuff. Probably the greatest joy during our snow fall is how much our dogs love to run and play in it. Sam and Atlas are both in haven, running through the snow like they’re training for the Iditarod. Little Rosey usually neck deep, still plows through right behind the boys.

Looking ahead, but living in the moment
The gloom and dark of winter will soon give way to the bright greens and beautiful colors that comes with spring. The farm will come alive with lavender, chamomile, lilacs, hawthorn, apple and cherry blossoms, wildflowers, herbs and more. But while we wait for the colors to return, we will enjoy the brief beauty of our Winter Wonderland.
